RRC Foundation Day 17 June 1863
All members, past and present, and other interested people are invited to celebrate the 150 Foundation Day of Richmond Rowing Club on Monday night 17 June 2013, at Young and Jackson’s Hotel, Chloe’s bar.
Head upstairs to Chloe’s bar for a relaxed celebration. On offer are micro brewed beers, Australian wines, unique cocktails and tasty tapas menu available.
In the 1800’s and early last century the Richmond Rowing Club would hold its meeting in hotels around the city area. The newspaper item here shows the 1914 annual meeting being promoted in the daily newspaper. The scanning process has made some words illegible. But you can see that the club had a definite interest in mixing rowing with drinking!

Presentation night and squad thank-yous
The RRC presentation night is fast approaching – Saturday 25 May.
Each year this night provides the club an opportunity to look back at the successes over the year, hear about some of the stories both on and off the water that made it special and present awards to those that lead the pack. It is also an occasion to formally thank coxes and coaches for all their time and commitment during the season both on race days and in training.
Generally speaking – squads are invited to thank their coaches/coxes in the first part of the evening, and while not compulsory often present a small gift and say a few words (no more than 3-5 mins).
What you need to do?
In order to ensure everyone is organised and someone isn’t inadvertently forgotten please could a representative of the squad/crew forward the following details to [email protected] by 23 May:
- Name of squad/crew saying thanks
- Who is being acknowledged – coach and/or cox name
See you on the night!
Redevelopment FAQ – General
I have more questions – where can I get further information?
The most direct way to get additional information about the redevelopment project is to either post a question/comment on the blog or send an email to one of the redevelopment team.
The project team will endeavour to get back to you with relevant information as soon as they are able.
Redevelopment FAQ – Governance
Who is working on the redevelopment project?
The Redevelopment project team comprises:
- Martin Foster – Head of Club Development
- Lucy Crunden – Vice President
- Emma Catford – President
- Franziska Locher – Club member and Architect
- Liz Sheil – Club member and Construction engineer
Franziska and Liz are leading the design and build phase of the project and are working very closely with the architects and other service providers to ensure the new building meets with MLC and RRC requirements.
Martin, Lucy and Emma have primarily been focusing on the new lease negotiations with CoM, MLC and prospective new tenants, finance, liquor licensing, and other project management functions.
This team reports to the RRC Committee who is ultimately responsible for the project and ensuring its completion within budget and on time.
Has the committee asked other rowing clubs about their experiences of boatshed expansions?
Yes. The committee as sought feedback from both YYRC and MRC regarding their experiences with their redevelopment projects and the impact on membership numbers.
On membership numbers post redevelopment, both YYRC and MRC have mentioned that they experienced a short lived boost which levelled off within a year or two.

RRC Signs New 21 Year Head Lease
At last we have signed the Head Lease for the Richmond Boathouse. This secures Richmond another 21 years at the boathouse, with the new lease ending in 2034.
Executing the Lease is the culmination of more than 4 years work by Martin Foster and Derek Begg to coordinate the rowing clubs, City of Melbourne, Victoria Police and Liquor Licensing Victoria. Martin looks pretty happy to be signing and sealing the Lease!
The Lease is now waiting for execution by City of Melbourne and the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE). Our colleagues at City of Melbourne have kindly offered to try to fast track this process. Fingers crossed we might have our Head Lease fully executed by mid-May.
Our agreements with MLC are just about complete and we anticipate that the MLC sub-lease will be submitted to City of Melbourne in mid-May. We are waiting to hear which Council meeting this can be scheduled for.
The MLC sub-lease must be executed by City of Melbourne and DSE before MLC releases the funds for the project. Building works will probably start towards the end of the year, but it all depends on how long it takes City of Melbourne and DSE to approve and execute the sub-lease.
Trivia triumph – March 2013
This year’s trivia night, held on 16 March, raised another staggering amount for the club – over $7000. As you know this is our biggest fundraiser event during the year and would not be possible without members, their friends, family and fellow rowing club members support. This support is provided by coming along on the night to have a good time, donating the huge array of goods and services for auction and of course to those that are the successful bidders.
This year’s funds will be directed to new equipment such as an ergo, cox box replacements/ refurbishments, shoes, boat upkeep to name just a few. Plus any remaining funds will be considered by the Committee over the coming season to be spent on other equipment as required.
Of course the night would not have got off the ground if it weren’t for the mastery of Justin Thomas – he true brains of the outfit. Justin ably put us through our paces again with questions being all things Russian. Thanks also goes to the numerous assistants – Vicki and Gemma for running the bar, Mike for all the logistics, Simon as auctioneer, and Katalin for entries and being Justin’s sounding board as he prepared for the big night.
If you have any ideas of fundraising activities/concepts you think we should try to raise funds for either new equipment or the boathouse redevelopment fund please drop me a line or another member of the Committee as we are always interested in new ideas.
The next event on the RRC calendar is presentation night – 25 May. Look forward to seeing you there.
Cheers Emma
Collecting oral histories
Sunday 28 April 2013 will be one of the first events for our 150th celebrations.
We invite all members, old members, or ex members to come to the club and share your stories!
* Stories about rowing at Richmond
* Stories of competing for Richmond
* Stories of RRC members and their successes or mishaps too
* Stories about any past club activities
Any story you remember and would like to share so we can record for others to hear and learn of what happened in our past. All our stories make up our colourful, wonderful history.
Please come down for lunch and drink, before we start recording stories. These oral histories will form part of our 150th Exhibition and become an important part of our Archives for future members to appreciate the culture and activities of RRC.
We will be very appreciative if you can spare this Sunday afternoon and hopefully meet up with some of your rowing pals too! The 150th Committee will be very pleased to meet you and show you around the current club and discuss our redevelopment plans.
Lunch (gold coin donation) 12 noon, with the bar open, and story recording during the afternoon.
RSVP by email to [email protected]
