Richmond Rowing Club Camp 2013

Various people have been busy in the background organising the 2013 Richmond Rowing Club Box Biting Championship.

What’s Box biting you say?
Well the only way you will find out is to attend the RICHMOND ROWING CLUB PRESEASON CAMP on the 4th 5th and 6th of October at Lake Nagambie.
Lake Nagambie is just 90 mins drive from Melbourne via the Hume Highway, located on the Goulbourn river and nestled amongst some of Victoria’s premier wine country although we may actually do some rowing too it is camp after all.
Your Cruise Director Rochelle be organising your cabins at the picturesque http://www.nagambielakespark.com.au/
We’ll send out additional details shortly including a packing list, member survey and how to get there details.

Strategic Plan – Draft for Comment

The Strategic Planning day in June seems ages ago but a dedicated group of volunteers are still busy working on the strategic plan and the operational plan for the next 12-18 months. It’s great to see the energy everyone is bringing to this with lots of new ideas!

Here is the draft strategic plan – thanks to Aaron for presenting it in RRC style. Have a look and let us know what you think…does the plan reflect the sort of club you think Richmond should be and the areas we should be focusing on?
The plan will be discussed at the AGM on Saturday evening so come along!

Strategic Planning Workshop

In our 150th anniversary year and with the Boathouse Redevelopment slowly moving towards building works, it is a good time for us as a club to take stock and plan for our future.
We would like your help in two ways:

  1. Please complete the survey you are emailed before 31 May. It will help us know what you think of about RRC.
  2. If you are interested in participating in the strategic planning process, please contact a committee member.

We will be holding a professionally facilitated workshop on Saturday 15 June between 10am and 4pm to work through a strategic planning process with a view to clarifying:
–          Our positioning and identity
–          Our Vision for the future
–          The highest priority actions we need to take to start to achieve our vision
We anticipate that this session will answer high level questions and result in a strategic plan that covers the same level of content as Sydney Rowing Club’s strategic plan does (but of course with RRC’s vision, actions, set of considerations etc). We are seeking a cross-section of members from across RRC to join the committee for this planning session.
We will then hold a more operational planning session later in the year that will create a detailed plan for the next 12-18 months and this part of the process will be repeated every year.
Any questions, please talk to one of the committee.
We would like to thank City of Melbourne for the provision of a grant to cover the cost of professional facilitation for this strategic planning process.

Celebrate our 150th Foundation day, 17 June 2013

RRC Foundation Day 17 June 1863
All members, past and present, and other interested people are invited to celebrate the 150 Foundation Day of Richmond Rowing Club on Monday night 17 June 2013, at Young and Jackson’s Hotel, Chloe’s bar.
Head upstairs to Chloe’s bar for a relaxed celebration. On offer are micro brewed beers, Australian wines, unique cocktails and tasty tapas menu available.
In the 1800’s and early last century the Richmond Rowing Club would hold its meeting in hotels around the city area. The newspaper item here shows the 1914 annual meeting being promoted in the daily newspaper. The scanning process has made some words illegible. But you can see that the club had a definite interest in mixing rowing with drinking!

RRC Signs New 21 Year Head Lease

At last we have signed the Head Lease for the Richmond Boathouse. This secures Richmond another 21 years at the boathouse, with the new lease ending in 2034.
Executing the Lease is the culmination of more than 4 years work by Martin Foster and Derek Begg to coordinate the rowing clubs, City of Melbourne, Victoria Police and Liquor Licensing Victoria. Martin looks pretty happy to be signing and sealing the Lease!

The Lease is now waiting for execution by City of Melbourne and the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE). Our colleagues at City of Melbourne have kindly offered to try to fast track this process. Fingers crossed we might have our Head Lease fully executed by mid-May.
Our agreements with MLC are just about complete and we anticipate that the MLC sub-lease will be submitted to City of Melbourne in mid-May. We are waiting to hear which Council meeting this can be scheduled for.
The MLC sub-lease must be executed by City of Melbourne and DSE before MLC releases the funds for the project. Building works will probably start towards the end of the year, but it all depends on how long it takes City of Melbourne and DSE to approve and execute the sub-lease.

Collecting oral histories

Sunday 28 April 2013 will be one of the first events for our 150th celebrations.
We invite all members, old members, or ex members to come to the club and share your stories!
RRCwantsU* Stories about rowing at Richmond
* Stories of competing for Richmond
* Stories of RRC members and their successes or mishaps too
* Stories about any past club activities
Any story you remember and would like to share so we can record for others to hear and learn of what happened in our past. All our stories make up our colourful, wonderful history.
Please come down for lunch and drink, before we start recording stories. These oral histories will form part of our 150th Exhibition and become an important part of our Archives for future members to appreciate the culture and activities of RRC.
We will be very appreciative if you can spare this Sunday afternoon and hopefully meet up with some of your rowing pals too! The 150th Committee will be very pleased to meet you and show you around the current club and discuss our redevelopment plans.
Lunch (gold coin donation) 12 noon, with the bar open, and story recording during the afternoon.

Lake Wendouree Ballarat Regatta Sunday 10th February

Wendouree

Richmond Rowing Club will be hitting the road this weekend to attend the Wendouree Ballarat Regatta.  If you are in the area on Sunday 10th of Feb head down to the lake and cheer on the RRC tigers.

This will be the first time competing on the former 1956 Olympics Rowing Venue for many tigers so most importantly remember to CHECK THE BOAT after you cross the line as the bank comes up fast.  Also check the weather forecast and pack for all 4 season anyway.

For those attending Peter Schouten will be our designated tow vehicle driver and boat loading will be 6pm Friday evening.  Derek and Dennis have the loading plan.

Good luck this weekend.

RRC's Blog – 2012 in review

RRC’s blog is hosted on WordPress.com which has created (automatically) a 2012 ‘annual report’ for the blog.
For some reason very few RRC members have subscribed to the club’s blog so far (we know – we can see who has/n’t!)  It would be great to see more in 2013 as it’s an easy, accessible way to get some of the club’s communications out to the membership.  Spread the word!
Meanwhile spend a few minutes of the last few hours of 2012 (or the first few of 2013) clicking through the blog’s stats for 2012.
HNY!!

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 4,200 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 7 years to get that many views.
