Coaching with RRC: A Fresh Approach

  • Do you have a spare hour or two once a month?
  • Have you been away from the club for a while, and would like to ease your way back onto the scene?
  • Have you had inspiring coaches in the past, and feel you could share your rowing tips?
  • Have you been coaching (or wanted to) but found the time commitment and organisation was beyond what you could give?

If any of this is you, then we have some great news.
This season we are proposing to run a new rowing structure – one that allows coaches with almost any level of experience and time commitment to be involved with the club, and to contribute to a team coaching culture.
We plan for the squads to move to bigger, more inclusive groups. To give you some idea of how things will be run:

  • Winter training will have a skills and fitness focus. Squads will be mixed and will not train in set boats or by sweep/scull only.
  • The head/sprint/masters phases are aimed at maximising the competitive experience of our sport.  We will focus on boats chosen across the squads and with an equal priority.
  • Coaches will primarily coach the squad, not the same boat, working in pairs so that each rower gets the benefit of each coach’s experience (as does the other coach).
  • Boats will not spend the entire session with one coach, moving between work with the coaches and away on their own.
  • In each competitive phase of the season, as key regattas approach coaches will work more often with specific boats, although the group approach will remain.
  • We will have set weekly club training sessions.  Squads will be run using a combination of online sign-up boards and dedicated squad organisers.
  • Training plans will be set for the entire squad, so coaches available for any particular week simply need to deliver one of the session plans allocated for that week.
Full details of the squad and coaching plan will be presented at a coaches meeting this Sunday, 13 July 2014 at 10am.  As the boathouse is still closed for redevelopment, we will meet at the usual Southbank coffee stop (outside Coffee Minded) and find a place to talk once we’re there.  Any changes to that location will be posted here on the blog. Subscribe for updates!
So if you’re interested in helping coach at RRC this season, a little or a lot, please come along and find out more.  We want to make it as easy  as possible for you to participate.

AGM – 11am Saturday 26th July – Change of Venue to Mercantile Rowing Club

Unfortunately we have been informed by our builders that due to the current site works occuring at the Richmond Rowing Club and due to a lack of power to the building we will be unable to hold this years AGM within our boathouse.

We have however been kindly offered the use of Mercantile’s boatclub and so we will be relocating a couple of doors down for the meeting on Saturday 26th July at 11am. Please see the previous blog post for details of the meeting and items to be discussed. We hope to see as many of you as possible present. We will be taking the opportunity to discuss some of the work that has been ongoing to plan for the upcoming season and update everyone on the progress.

Access update and help required this Saturday – 12th July 9am

As many of you will be aware we have been working hard to enable those people still wishing to train over the Winter break to have access to the fleet during our redevelopment project.  The builders are making progress and you can see the huge scale of this project now but unfortunately the upstairs of our shed still remains unaccessible and entry is only possible through the boat bay roller doors (which are however new and shiny).
We have been accessing our fleet in the MLC bay while works proceeded however MLC will be returning to rowing next week (Thursday 17th July) and as a result we need to move everything back into our original bay THIS WEEKEND. Unfortunately our hardworking captain has been whisked away to Manilla for work and so I am looking for volunteers to help me do this on Saturday morning, 12th July from 9am. Many hands make light work so I am hopeful it will not take too long.
Whilst Barry is away only Michelle Joy has a key to open up the shed, she alone has been inducted for the worksite and therefore is the only member of RRC with permission to open the boatclub. Currently the shed will be open for those wishing to row on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 6am, Saturday’s Winter sculling and Sunday all club training from 8am. Please remember to use the signout book if you are rowing at these times. If you have any questions regarding this arrangement or wish to offer your help on Saturday morning please contact me, [email protected].  Everyone’s help, understanding and patience during this time is really appreciated. We will keep you updated on any changes to this situation as soon as they become available.

You gave us feedback and we’ve listened!

The message was clear following our planning day so we’ve been working with extended groups to get ready for the upcoming season.
As a club we have prioritised taking action to rejuvenate our squad structure. You can expect additional training flexibility and a united club training culture. We will have more crews on the water together, racing one another and pushing each other to succeed.
The goal is to unite members through training, to improve our skills on the water and have fun while doing it. Things are moving quickly. We plan to launch the new season as soon as possible once we have access to all our fleet and boathouse. Keep an eye on the blog for more information and make sure you come to the AGM on Saturday 26th July (10am at the clubhouse) to hear more about our plans and get involved.
So what’s next? Click here and tell us what your goals and expectations are for the coming season. Be quick we don’t want to miss you off the list. It may be cold outside at the moment and the thought of putting your feet in the Yarra may not fill you with joy but Winter is the ideal time to start to build fitness and plan for the Spring Head racing season which always looms onto the calendar very quickly at the start of a new season. For example there’s only 2 months until Salty and those rowers who want to be out in a quad competing at Essendon could be out training now if we know that you want to aim for that regatta. Also this year is special because Victoria is hosting the World Masters Games between the 9-12th October in Ballarat. Members aged 27 or over may like to compete in this competition as well and so it would be helpful to know numbers for planning for these events.
So what are you waiting for, complete the survey.

RRC Annual General Meeting 26 July 2014

The RRC Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on Saturday 26 July 2014 at 10AM in the clubhouse. Although the redevelopment will not be completed, we will have access and use of the hall. It will be a great opportunity for members to meet, appreciate the improvements to our hall, as well as participating in the AGM.
The AGM includes reports from the current committee, elections for the 152nd committee and voting on changes to the Rules of Association (RofA).
We are required to make a few changes to our RofA to be compliant with the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012. The Committee has taken the opportunity to review all our RofA and make a few other amendments to reflect current requirements and modernise language. A link to the summary of changes is below.
If you are considering nominating for the 2013-14 committee then please speak to a current committee member to seek information on the time and work required. A link to the nomination form is below.
All nominations for the 2014-15 committee must be with the Secretary 14 days prior to the AGM, that is Saturday 12 July 2014. Completed nomination forms can be scanned and attached in an email to the Secretary ([email protected]) ,handed to me in person or posted to the Secretary. Currently no mail box is available at the club, so all mail needs to be directed to; 13A Warana Way Mount Eliza 3930. Continue reading “RRC Annual General Meeting 26 July 2014”

Save the Date – Sunday Oct 5th!

boathouse grand opening

As you will have all hopefully seen the boathouse redevelopment is moving at pace now (even despite the weather this week). There is still lots to do and a big thank you to everyone who has helped get us this far.

We still need more funds to purchase the racking for this new area and it is not too late for you to donate using this ASF form to make a tax deductible donation. Click through now, complete the form and email or send it to Anthea, our Secretary, [email protected]. Every bit you can donate will help us towards our target $20,000.

We have now fixed a date to celebrate and officially hold “The Grand Opening” of the new boathouse and it is Sunday 5th October, so make sure you save the date! You will notice it is in our online calendar along with a draft of upcoming events for the new season.

I am currently recruiting volunteers to help be involved in organising the event. Could I ask anyone who would like to offer their ideas and help to promote, organise and make this event the huge celebration it deserves to contact me, [email protected] and we can start the planning.

Redevelopment Update 25 June

The new boathouse is starting to take shape – standing in the hall it is amazing the difference that removing the old windows has made. The view is going to be even more stunning than before.
Downstairs the front stairs have been removed and we can now see the additional space for boat storage. We still need many more funds to purchase the racking for this area……donate now using the ASF form on this site to make a tax deductible donation http://3.25.77.84/download/ASF%20Donation%20Form%20.pdf
Click through now, complete the form and email or send it to Anthea, our Secretary. Every bit you can donate will help us towards our target $20,000.
A big thanks to the people that have already made donations to help with the racking.
Over the next two weeks we expect the following works to be completed:
Week 1 commencing 23rd June

  • Carpenters will continue framing and plastering
  • Concreter will screen terrace
  • Window installation will commence
  • Plumber will install water tank and internal rough in.
  • Electrician will continue internal rough in.

Week 2

  • Carpenters will complete framing and plastering
  • Window installation will continue
  • Floor coverings to existing building
  • Roofer completes roofing
  • Painting continues

Successful season review and planning

I wanted to thank everyone for their input either through completion of our survey or by their attendence at this years planning day.
We had almost 20 people take part in the planning day all offering their ideas and suggestions to help make next season at Richmond another fun and successful year. The committee is currently looking at taking this feedback forward and we hope to be able to present to you some of our goals and priorities going forward at this years AGM on July 26th.
I wanted to offer a special thanks to Lucy Crunden who ran and facilitated the whole day and Geraldine Goss who let us take over her house for the day.

Redevelopment Update

Anyone who has been down to the boathouse since we gave the builders exclusive access at the start of June will see that they are making good progress with the building works. The roof is on, pergola erected, old front stairs demolished, windows removed and so on. In the next two weeks the planned building works are as follows:
Week 1 commencing 9th June

  • Form Stair 1 and pour late in the week
  • Electrical rough in at both levels
  • Measure windows and roller shutters
  • Continue carpentry to walls and ceilings
  • Commence plumbing rough in

 Week 2 commencing 16th June

  • Electrical rough in continues
  • Plastering upstairs
  • Blockwork to underside of stairs
  • Plumbing rough in continues

At this stage we expect to have use of the boathouse again in mid July and for the building works to be completed in mid August, as planned.
