Victorian State Championships 2015

So the Victorian State Championships for another year are complete. This year we were all excited to head back to Lake Nagambie but with the windy conditions that greeted us on Sunday you would be forgiven for mistaking it for Lake Wendouree at Ballarat. If you think I’m exaggerating you should ask Vicki Brennan and Jodie Naisbitt what it was like just getting to the start line for the WD2X 😉
The morning session saw a few Richmond crews in straight finals with six or seven total crews entered per event. So with no warm up race they took to the water and battled the conditions and the other crews each proudly coming away with bronze medals. There was the hotly contested Female C8+ (Sophia Robinson, Karen Doggett, Ainsley Raggatt, Kate Cooper, Geraldine Goss, Michelle Joy, Rochelle Stokes, Kate Dyball and cox Mike Numa), Male C2- (Sam Morrison and Ben van Biljon) and Male D4+ (David Micallef, Kieran Burke, PJ Eadie, Daniel Meka and cox Roy Zhang) which had some inter as well as intra club competition.

The medals kept coming in the afternoon session as well with more bronze bling going to the Female C2X (Michelle Joy and Karen Doggett), Male B4+ (Tim foster, Sam Morrison, Ben van Biljon, George Hartley and cox Vanessa van Biljon) and Female D4X+ (Ainsley Raggatt, Catherine Hardie, Lindsey Beck, Caroline Manning and cox Mike Numa). Along with her quad medal Carolyn Manning also braved the conditions in the single finishing an impressive fourth in the C1X final and going one better over the 2km course picking up bronze in the B1X.

We didn’t just stop at bronze medals though we had some excellent results for the Female D4+ (Emily Dunn, Kate Cooper, Catherine Hardie, Lindsey Beck coxed by Derek Begg), Male D4X+ (Michael Calvert, Michael Gehling, Alan Randall, PJ Eadie and cox Rebecca Lionnet) and Female D8+ (Erin Faulkner, Stephanie Dudczig, Sarah Ryan, Thalia Marshall, Sarah McNicol, Shern Timmins, Karin Bouvin, Elaine Hynes and cox Derek Begg) who all fought their way to silver medals.

The competition was strong and although we may not have come away champions this year I think the spread of medals, and other great results across so many different competitors in different grades and different classes of boats is a real testament to a great season at RRC. As usual a big thanks to everyone who contributed to the success on the day and in all the training and build up to the event – rowers, coxes, coaches and supporters. A special mention to Tim Evans who towed the trailer and Barry Campbell who completed our BRO duties.

Preparations for Victorian State Championships

This weekend the sprint season hits its pinnacle with the Rowing Victoria State Championships, taking place at Nagambie. Richmond will be competing on Sunday 1st March in mens and womens sweep and sculling events and we wish everyone taking part good luck and a great day of racing.
For those attending Boat loading will be this Friday at 6pm.
Don’t forget to check ROMS for the up to date schedule, event times and to check out your competition.
A quick congratulations to everyone who took part in last Saturdays Australian Henley regatta too. With both male and female crews winning heats or qualifying in time trials to progress in a fiercely competitive event with total seats up from 740 last year to 1109 this year. Geraldine Goss was a final winner in a composite female masters coxed quad scull.
The sun and humidity definitely had a lot of us keen to make use of our new air conditioned clubhouse and refreshing bar after racing and a big thanks to Cat Hardie and her team on the bar and bbq who organised the afternoon activities. Also thanks to Justin Thomas who once again took on RRC’s BRO duties and stood through scorching sunshine and torrential rain – only in Melbourne.
Until next week…..

Sprint season regatta success

For the past two weeks RRC has taken part in a couple of sprint regattas getting that all important race practice in the lead up to the Victorian State Championships. There have been some fun races and great results.
Sunday 1st Feb was spent at a very cold, wet and windy Lake Colac regatta on the Barwon river. This regatta was a tale of second places for the FD4+, FD8+ and Mix8+ with RRC being involved in some very close and exciting finishes. One crew of Michelle Joy and Karen Doggett in the C2X came out on top in a final sprint for the line finishing less than a second clear of their rivals from Footscray. Wins also went to Geraldine Goss in two Hawthorn composite masters crews  in the Coxed E Quad and E-F Four.
WD8+ Lake Colac
A week later we descended on Ballarat, this time as hard as it is to believe at Lake Wendouree the sun shone (but their is photographic proof ). I think everyone was fired up from the racing a week earlier and Kieran was so determined he pulled so hard he snapped his oar in half during the MD4+. However with a drive to succeed the wins kept coming. There were medals for the WC8+, WC4X+ and WD4+. Not to be out done the men waited for both their coaches to arrive and cheer them on from the bank to bring home the title of the MD8+.
MD8+ Ballarat
I must thank our BROs for both events – Sam Morrison, Micheal Gehling, Karen Doggett and Rochelle Stokes and trailer drivers Charlie Burke and Time Evans. As always a lot of work goes in to organising these trips to regattas and we hope everyone who took part had fun. Only a few weeks left til the state championships and clearly things are looking good for RRC! Keep up the good work and see you all next Saturday rowing or cheering on RRC at the home Yarra based regatta of Australian Henley which will be followed by a club social on the deck.

Australian Henley Social

Henley Poster copy

Summer is officially in full swing! So to celebrate and as another excuse to socialise on our “oarsome” deck we will be holding a club social on Saturday 21st February to coincide with the Australian Henley regatta.
Racing runs from approximately 9:30am to 3:30pm so we will have the bar open from noon to cater for racers and spectators a like. We will also run a BBQ for a gold coin donation.
Hopefully we will have a number of RRC successes to celebrate on the day!
Liquor licence is sorted, crews will be selected shortly, but if you can help out on the bar or run the BBQ on the day, please contact Cat Hardie ([email protected]) by Wed 4th Feb!
Also please mention to all your friends, family, rowing widows / widowers, contacts in other clubs, and anybody else who would like to hang out in the best and most reasonably priced beer garden in Melbourne!

Sprint racing weekend in Rutherglen

A big contingent from Richmond headed to Rutherglen for the first sprint event of the season on the weekend of the 8th. In a hotly contested competition on Lake Moodemere, the club took out golds in 10 events.
Races were held over 800m and 500m courses, which made for close races and sometimes clashing oars. As anyone who’s raced at Rutherglen before knows, staying in your lane is an extra skill on top of staying upright in your boat and crossing that finish line.
Special congratulations to all the winning crews listed below and Kathryn Macrow for jumping into the coxing seat time and time again bringing success with it.
Many thanks to all Richmond rowers, coaches and organisers for a great weekend. Next year will be the 150th Rutherglen event and no doubt will draw even bigger numbers to what is already one of the highlights of Rowing Victoria’s calendar so mark it in your diaries for January 16-17th 2016!

Sprint season is underway

Well done to all who attended our Sprint Rowing Camp on the weekend. Special thanks to all our dedicated coaches and once again, especially to Lindsey for her support helping to organise our coxes.
The flash of black and gold on the water was very impressive. Many sessions we had 3 eights, three quads, 3 fours and other boat combinations. That is a massive effort. You should all feel a little sore, with renewed blisters and fitness!
Now to channel that fitness into some racing.
We are currently organising entries for Lake Colac Regatta Sunday 01st Feb. Urgently  review your status on sportsplanner for this regatta so we can complete crew planning. Entries are due this weekend.
I will be emailing the women’s squads directly.
Sadly, this year we will not be attending the Pennant Regatta in Tasmania. The logistics for such a regatta are heavy and with so many other rowing commitments, we just haven’t been able to execute this.
It will remain on the agenda for 2016 and a planning group allocated.
See you on the water this week for some more ‘quick legs down’ training
Regards, Rochelle

Melbourne Head

This weekend an amazing squad of tigers will take to the river in the Melbourne Head regatta. Everyone has been training hard and it has been great to see so many people at the clubhouse for this Head racing season.
Don’t forget after all the racing is done we will be opening the doors of our fantastic clubhouse to the Melbourne rowing community and welcoming friends and family to enjoy an afternoon on the terrace, with the bar open and some sausages sizzling. Please spread the word and if you are able to help on the bbq for an hour or so let me know [email protected]

Head of the Goulburn

10641001_10204452443967300_5655954697401836558_nIt was a big ambush of tigers that soaked up the sun at Nagambie last Sunday for the annual Bridge to Vines 7.2km head race along the beautiful Goulburn River.
Richmond had a impressive number of entries and an equally impressive results list.
The fastest Richmond crew on the day was the FD8+ who won their division in a time of 30:23 overtaking all their competitors along the course. Sophie, Karen, Ainslie, Kate C, Amanda, Michelle, Rochelle and Kate D were coxed to success by Mike Numa with coaching credit going to Simon Crunden and Dennis Beck. Dennis Beck did not stop there though earning himself a coxing medal with the male D quad, Micheal G, Micheal C, Charlie and Dave who pulled him along the course in 33:13.
Completing the Richmond domination in D grade the WD4+ of Emily, Amy, Cat and Lindsey coxed by Derek won their race in 35:31. With another Richmond crew in the WD4+ and more crews also in the MD8+, WD4X+, MM4X+ and FM1X Richmond certainly showed a strong presence on the river and then back on land as we enjoyed the celebrations and the fruits of our hard work at the finishing line at Thabilk winery.
Another great day for the club and a huge thanks to all those who helped make it happen especially Pete Schouten for safely delivering our boats.

World Masters Rowing Regatta

A week after the opening of the new clubhouse, the highlights continue for the Richmond Rowing Club with a number of superb performances at the World Masters Rowing Regatta in Ballarat. Richmond was represented in 28 events, winning eight gold medals and a number of minor places to finish sixth overall in the medal tally.
Caroline Manning and Ray Dennis were the standouts for the club, winning three gold medals each over the four day regatta. Carolyn and tom
Caroline Manning won two golds in the B and D single sculls and one in a D composite quad sculls. Caroline was ecstatic with the results. “It’s not often that this happens in life, it is very special moment for me”, an emotional Caroline said after her win in the single scull. Caroline paid homage to her partner and coach Tom Appleby, saying she was grateful for the huge amount of time and effort he had invested to help her to prepare over the last six months leading into the regatta; “He has been remarkable”, she said.
On the first day of the regatta, Richmond lRay Dennisegend Ray Dennis picked up the clubs first gold medal in the I single scull against rowers from Australia, Germany, Japan and Great Britain. Ray won his second gold medal on day two in a I-K quad scull, and his third in the bow seat of a composite I-K eight on the fourth and final day. Ray was unlucky not to pick up a fourth gold medal but unfortunately, his pair partner had an accident putting the boat on the water forcing them to pull out of the event in which they were hot favourites.
Also on day one, Geraldine Goss picked up yet another gold medal at a major Masters regatta, this time in an E quad scull. Running late due to an eventful trip up from Melbourne, Geraldine only just made it to the start line in time for the race. Despite the rush, the crew were able to catch their breath before the start and managed to pull off a narrow win against a determined Essendon crew. One win was all Geraldine had time for, as she had to cut her regatta short to fly to Boston to join her crew to race in the Head of the Charles.
On day two, Alex Silber, a member of the club for over fifty years, won his H single scull in rather dramatic circumstances. Alex struggled in the heavy conditions finding himself in last place at the halfway point of his race. However, Alex found his form as the conditions flattened out towards the shelter of the finish, and proceeded to row through the field to win by two seconds, and in the process, pick up the club’s third gold medal.
Richmond crews dominated the small boat racing throughout the regatta. Club President Karen Doggett, was pleased to see so many Richmond rowers competing and was particularly impressed with the club finishing sixth in the medal tally. “Another highlight was the large contingent of international crews, including a Japanese men’s eight that competed on Lake Wendouree during the 1956 Melbourne Olympics”, she said.
Head of Rowing Rochelle Stokes, was also very pleased with how the club performed. “The wins in the singles were a major highlight; the first time Richmond men and women have won single sculling races at the same World Masters Championship”, she said. Rochelle was also pleased to see so many members competing strongly in the Richmond colours in the extreme conditions experienced on the first two days of the regatta.
WA4+
Finally, the quote of the regatta goes to Tamara ‘Tams’ Mayfield, who excitedly said before the start of the women’s B eight, “Have you seen the competition girls? We are going to smash this”! Moments later, a boat featuring a large number of the Australian women’s eight from the 2004 Atlanta Olympics rowed onto the course and onto the start. As they say, the rest is history.
Well done to all the crews that competed at the World Masters rowing Regatta and the many people who assisted the crews leading up to and during the event.
