Below is a copy of the heartfelt eulogy delivered by Ray Dennis this week at Bob Stanley’s funeral. It highlights the important contribution Bob made to Richmond Rowing Club and I hope that those of you who knew him will read it with fond memories and for those of you newer to the club who maybe were unaware of his impact will realise how special he was.
I am honoured to be here today on behalf of the Committee and members of Richmond Rowing Club, and the general Rowing community to recognize the contributions to these organizations given by Bob, and to express our heartfelt condolences to Ivy and the family.
The esteem that Bob earned in his association with our sport is shown in the fact that he was elected as a life member of two clubs, Preston and Richmond.
Bob commenced his rowing career with Preston Rowing club, which had a shed on Edwardes lake, and another on the Yarra at Newcut corner. This was a necessity as the lake’s course was quite restricted, only suitable for pairs, and to gain the fitness level and endurance to compete in the longer events it was essential to have access to the expanse of the Yarra. Thus training was quite an onerous task, especially negotiating the traffic on Batman Avenue. This shed was demolished in 1956 in the preparations for the Olympics.
Nevertheless Bob was a highly successful oarsman. Teaming with Jack Hibbert they were the basis of most of Preston’s crews at this time. They had great success rowing in a Champion Junior 8, Senior Fours, and in the early 50’s went on to win several Senior Pairs, they were I believe a formidable combination.
At an early age Bob showed enterprise as a recruiter, and spotter of talent, he attended a Northcote High School assembly and addressed the group of boys encouraging Neville Howell to join Preston, although I am unsure about the initiation given, as the first row was in a dilapidated boat which sank, leaving Jack, Bob, and Neville to swim to shore.
When Preston disbanded, a friendship with Rod Stewart, that began in 1950 when a Richmond crew were in dire need of a boat at Ballarat, Bob showed his usual generosity, and allowed his boat to be loaned to Rod and Harry Grinblatt, this along with his support for the Richmond football club, influenced his decision and we were fortunate that Bob chose us to continue his association with rowing.
At Richmond Bob was an enthusiastic participant in all areas of the clubs activities, he was originally involved with the veterans eight on Sundays, but soon graduated to become a committee member, first serving as a general member, then as President from 1985-1988 and finally as Executive Vice President till 1995, as well as holding the position of selector during this time.
Bob took the position of President at a time when both the club’s financial position and its’ membership base were not at all healthy, but Bob’s good humour, positive outlook, and organizational skills allowed the club to weather the storm and then to flourish.
His dedication to the sport was shown in that for many years he also acted as a boat race official, travelling to the many city and country regattas to perform the various duties necessary to ensure the fair and efficient operation of these events. This was always done as Bob did everything, without fanfare but with an impish grin and quiet good humour. Everyone who had dealings with him commented that “Bob was a gentleman”
In the latter years he competed in Masters events teaming with Don Dudgeon in pairs and fours with success at Westlakes in an E four and later with Banks in a larger Composite crew, his last regatta was at the Australian Masters Championships at Nagambie in 2008 where he gained Silver.
From the 90’s he continued his social rowing with Rod Stewart and the pair were an institution on Sunday morning rowing the tub pair to the Island and back. This only ceased very recently when he and Rod found it difficult to manhandle the boat on the slippery staging, but even this did not diminish his attendance at the club or his exercise regime as he still travelled by train and used the ergo regularly.
The dedication to the sport of Rowing and his intense loyalty to both Preston and Richmond Rowing Clubs will long be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Victorian State Championships 2015
So the Victorian State Championships for another year are complete. This year we were all excited to head back to Lake Nagambie but with the windy conditions that greeted us on Sunday you would be forgiven for mistaking it for Lake Wendouree at Ballarat. If you think I’m exaggerating you should ask Vicki Brennan and Jodie Naisbitt what it was like just getting to the start line for the WD2X 😉
The morning session saw a few Richmond crews in straight finals with six or seven total crews entered per event. So with no warm up race they took to the water and battled the conditions and the other crews each proudly coming away with bronze medals. There was the hotly contested Female C8+ (Sophia Robinson, Karen Doggett, Ainsley Raggatt, Kate Cooper, Geraldine Goss, Michelle Joy, Rochelle Stokes, Kate Dyball and cox Mike Numa), Male C2- (Sam Morrison and Ben van Biljon) and Male D4+ (David Micallef, Kieran Burke, PJ Eadie, Daniel Meka and cox Roy Zhang) which had some inter as well as intra club competition.
The medals kept coming in the afternoon session as well with more bronze bling going to the Female C2X (Michelle Joy and Karen Doggett), Male B4+ (Tim foster, Sam Morrison, Ben van Biljon, George Hartley and cox Vanessa van Biljon) and Female D4X+ (Ainsley Raggatt, Catherine Hardie, Lindsey Beck, Caroline Manning and cox Mike Numa). Along with her quad medal Carolyn Manning also braved the conditions in the single finishing an impressive fourth in the C1X final and going one better over the 2km course picking up bronze in the B1X.
We didn’t just stop at bronze medals though we had some excellent results for the Female D4+ (Emily Dunn, Kate Cooper, Catherine Hardie, Lindsey Beck coxed by Derek Begg), Male D4X+ (Michael Calvert, Michael Gehling, Alan Randall, PJ Eadie and cox Rebecca Lionnet) and Female D8+ (Erin Faulkner, Stephanie Dudczig, Sarah Ryan, Thalia Marshall, Sarah McNicol, Shern Timmins, Karin Bouvin, Elaine Hynes and cox Derek Begg) who all fought their way to silver medals.
The competition was strong and although we may not have come away champions this year I think the spread of medals, and other great results across so many different competitors in different grades and different classes of boats is a real testament to a great season at RRC. As usual a big thanks to everyone who contributed to the success on the day and in all the training and build up to the event – rowers, coxes, coaches and supporters. A special mention to Tim Evans who towed the trailer and Barry Campbell who completed our BRO duties.
Don’t forget the sprint season isn’t over yet and if you want to attend either the Footscray and Essendon sprint regattas or the Mildura Easter weekend away regatta please contact [email protected] as soon as possible for more information and then there’s Masters Season….
Australian Henley Social
Summer is officially in full swing! So to celebrate and as another excuse to socialise on our “oarsome” deck we will be holding a club social on Saturday 21st February to coincide with the Australian Henley regatta.
Racing runs from approximately 9:30am to 3:30pm so we will have the bar open from noon to cater for racers and spectators a like. We will also run a BBQ for a gold coin donation.
Hopefully we will have a number of RRC successes to celebrate on the day!
Liquor licence is sorted, crews will be selected shortly, but if you can help out on the bar or run the BBQ on the day, please contact Cat Hardie ([email protected]) by Wed 4th Feb!
Also please mention to all your friends, family, rowing widows / widowers, contacts in other clubs, and anybody else who would like to hang out in the best and most reasonably priced beer garden in Melbourne!

RRC Redevelopment Celebration
The official opening of the newly redeveloped Richmond Rowing Club was celebrated in style on Sunday 5th October. Looking back on everything that lead to the success of the day I’m so proud of all we have been able to achieve. It has been an amazing effort by a very large team of people to really make our vision of a great boathouse a reality.
We were joined by over 150 people to finally open the new section of the boathouse and with the sun shining down it was clear to see everyone was desperate to get out onto our new deck and take in the 180° views of the city. I want to t
hank Mr Peter Antonie for stepping up to cut the black and
gold ribbon and for his kind words about our great club and its significant history. Continue reading “RRC Redevelopment Celebration”
Save the Date – Sunday Oct 5th!
As you will have all hopefully seen the boathouse redevelopment is moving at pace now (even despite the weather this week). There is still lots to do and a big thank you to everyone who has helped get us this far.
We still need more funds to purchase the racking for this new area and it is not too late for you to donate using this ASF form to make a tax deductible donation. Click through now, complete the form and email or send it to Anthea, our Secretary, [email protected]. Every bit you can donate will help us towards our target $20,000.
We have now fixed a date to celebrate and officially hold “The Grand Opening” of the new boathouse and it is Sunday 5th October, so make sure you save the date! You will notice it is in our online calendar along with a draft of upcoming events for the new season.
I am currently recruiting volunteers to help be involved in organising the event. Could I ask anyone who would like to offer their ideas and help to promote, organise and make this event the huge celebration it deserves to contact me, [email protected] and we can start the planning.
Girl Power – Tough racing in challenging conditions at Victorian State Championships
With a team of 46 including rowers, coxes and coaches descending on Lake Wendouree the Richmond tigers were represented strongly in both numbers and presence at last weekends Victorian State Championships. With a final tally of 7 medals (3 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze) RRC had a very successful days racing and here’s a few of the highlights.
The female C8+ was represented with two crews from Richmond, both a C and D crew. Ballarat was living up to its reputation, with strong winds and an overcast, cold morning, leaving the girls shivering as they prepared to get on the water. Regardless of the temperature, everyone involved went into the straight final with fire in their bellies. It's Henley, Dah-ling!
As always, RRC was out in its most fashionable race wear on Saturday for the Australian Henley regatta. The regatta has been held in Melbourne since 1903 and is based on the format of the Royal Henley Regatta in England. The format involves knock out rounds of two crews racing side-by-side from 800m down to the judge’s box.
Although Richmond’s participation in the event has been light in recent years, Saturday the club had representation from Ray Dennis in the Men’s Masters 8+ and from Geraldine Goss in the Women’s Masters 8+, while fielding a full crew of tigers in the Women’s C8+. Australian Henley Picnic – Saturday 22nd Feb
The Australian Henley Regatta has been conducted by the Melbourne Amateur Regatta Association on the Yarra since 1904. Their aim was to conduct a regatta on the same line as the world-renowned Henley Royal Regatta.
Next Saturday 22nd February, marks this year’s event and some of our very own Richmond rowers will be competing. To celebrate the event and to enjoy the spirit of rowing in the city of Melbourne RRC will be gathering on the banks of the Yarra for a picnic.

The Joy of the Lake – Richmond Goes to Tassie
Indeed, the joy was abundant.
First, Lake Barrington is a magnificent setting for a regatta – checkout Leonie Cluse’s photos (she spent more time jabbing at her new photo app than wielding oars). Plus it’s a world class, straight, buoyed course. Easy to forget just how far 2km is when you don’t often get to see its whole length! Continue reading “The Joy of the Lake – Richmond Goes to Tassie”
